Introduction

Every year landslides cause great losses of lives and property, and extensive degradation to the environment, especially in mountainous terrains. Landslides often induce damage to infrastructure such as roads, dams, hydropower, irrigation, bridges and so on. The numbers and frequency of occurrence of the natural calamities are particularly high in orogenic zones. The impacts of landslides are particularly pronounced in less developed countries located in such terrains, exacerbated by the meagre resources available to cope with the problems. Hence, there is a major role for earth scientists and engineers to play in the search for appropriate, sustainable solutions to these problems.

Mountainous countries share common problems but also have unique prospects of development through collective initiatives. Interaction and cooperation among scientists from these countries is needed not only to assist in solving problems that they have in common, but also to allow the advancement of science and technology for society as a whole. Thus, it is clearly necessary to investigate and conduct detailed research on these natural phenomena. engineers, environmentalists, sociologists d e
