Entry Procedures
All foreigners except the Indian Nationals must hold a passport and a valid visa. Visa can be obtained at the Nepalese Diplomatic Missions and Consuls abroad. However, a visa can also be obtained at the point of entry. Two passport-size photographs are also required for the visa. Citizens of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries and the People’s Republic of China are entitled to a visa without fee.

Airport Tax
A departure tax of Rs. 791 per person for travel to SAARC (South Asian) countries and Rs. 1130 for departure to other international destinations is charged at the point of exit.

Airport Transportation
Participants who provide detailed information on their date of arrival, time and flight number will be met at the airport. In case you miss the pick-up, take a taxi to your reserved hotel. Taxis should be arranged through the official booth at the exit to the arrivals area. The charge to travel from the Airport to any hotel in Kathmandu city should be about US$ 4 to $7.

Medicines/vaccines

Health concerns are specific to individuals and it is difficult to generalise. You must take those vaccines (such as against typhoid, hepatitis A and B, etc.) that you think necessary or that are suggested by your doctor before leaving your country. If you are not sure and need further information on vaccines and medicines, you should ask an institute working on tropical diseases in your home country. Participants attending the pre-symposium excursion, which includes an overnight stay in southern plain areas of Nepal, must decide if they want to take medicine for malaria during the preceding weeks or the following weeks after the trip. Necessary medicine for malaria is recommended. Kathmandu is safe from malaria.

Climate
Weather in Nepal in late September is generally pleasant with mildly cold mornings and evenings. You are advised to bring light warm clothing for Kathmandu. Although the post-monsoon period of late September is normally rain-free, rainy weather cannot be ruled out.

Currency
Nepalese Rupee (NRs.) is the currency of Nepal. Bank notes come in NRs. 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 denominations. Coins come NRs. 1, 2 and 5.

Foreign currencies must be exchanged only through the banks or authorized foreign exchange dealers. The receipts from such transactions are to be obtained and retained. Participants can exchange foreign currency at the foreign exchange counter at the airport upon arrival.

All foreigners other than Indian nationals have to make the payments in hotels, travel or trekking agencies and air tickets in US$ or other convertible foreign currency. Non-Indian visitors are not allowed to import or export Indian Currency.  At the time of writing the rate of exchange of US$ 1 is about NRs. 70.
